Born in Madrid, Spain, designer Michael Colovos moved to the United States in 1975 at the age of five. He was raised in Seattle, Washington and later went on to graduate from Seattle Pacific University. In 1994, he moved to New York City to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 1995, Michael relocated to Florence, Italy to continue his studies in design at Polimoda. He then went on to Paris and worked briefly in the design studio of Guy Laroche. Michael returned to New York in mid-1996 to work as a freelance designer and illustrator before launching Colovos in the fall of 1998. Colovos, a collection of women’s clothing, was sold at Barneys New York, Linda Dresner and Fred Segal. Michael’s collection, Colovos, led way to Welkin, a women’s ready-to-wear line, which debuted for the Fall/Winter 2001 season and continued through 2003.In 2001, Michael Colovos met Nicole Garrett. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Nicole studied photography, art, and art history at Selwyn College. In 1987, she moved to Sydney, Australia, enrolling in the Film Makeup Technology School. In 1991, she commenced full-time as Fashion Editor for Australian Elle. Working at Elle for five years, she then moved to New York in 1997 to pursue freelance styling. That year, Nicole began freelancing for U.S. Harper’s Bazaar as Associate Fashion Editor, later becoming a Senior Market Editor.
For the Fall/Winter 2002 season, Michael Colovos and Nicole Garrett launched Habitual. That year Nicole resigned from Harper’s Bazaar to work full-time on further developing the Habitual collection with Michael. In June 2003, they married; a few months later moved to Los Angeles, denim capital of the world, which has contributed to the growing success of the Habitual brand. In October 2004, Michael and Nicole were the recipients of the 1st Annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award for emerging designers.
In March 2006, Andrew Rosen, the founder and President of Theory, drove the Link Theory Acquisition of Helmut Lang. He can be credited with bringing Michael and Nicole on board at the design helm. The couple moved back to New York City in 2006 to join Helmut Lang and launch the first collection in Spring 2007. Their emphasis on construction and strong but subtle detail is perfectly suited to their new post. Under Andrew’s guidance, and Michael and Nicole’s creative vision, Helmut Lang has grown into a flourishing global business.
Nicole and Michael Colovos currently reside in New York City with their three boys: Max, born in 2005 and twins Arlo and Finn, born in 2010.
